You insert a new SFP+ module. The switch logs a warning: "Transceiver module in GigabitEthernet0/1 is not a Cisco approved module." Or on some firmware versions, the interface does not come up at all.
The module is from a reputable manufacturer. It meets the optical specifications. It costs a fraction of the Cisco OEM price. But the switch firmware does not accept it.
This is the vendor lock-in problem in SFP transceivers -- and recoded compatible modules are the solution.
How SFP Vendor Lock Works
SFP, SFP+, and QSFP modules communicate with the host switch via a two-wire serial interface (I2C / MDIO). Inside the module is a small EEPROM chip that stores identification data: vendor name, part number, serial number, and a set of vendor-specific bytes.
When Cisco IOS or NX-OS firmware reads this EEPROM, it checks the vendor identifier against an internal approved-vendor list. If the vendor bytes do not match expected values, the firmware raises a warning or disables the interface entirely.
This is not a technical safety mechanism -- the module is optically and electrically identical to the OEM version. It is a commercial control. The only meaningful difference is the EEPROM content.
What Recoding Does
Recoding -- also called vendor coding or OEM programming -- involves writing the correct vendor-specific EEPROM values to the module before it ships. An Innova module recoded for Cisco will have its EEPROM programmed with the Cisco-expected vendor identifiers.
Result: the switch reads the module, finds the expected vendor data, and enables the interface without warnings -- exactly as it would for a genuine Cisco OEM module.

- It does not grant Cisco TAC support coverage on that port
